Junior Achievement of South Central PA reached over 33,000 students last year with the help of over 1,200 volunteers. Our volunteers come from all walks of life including business people, college students, parents and retirees. Our office celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2011.
JA’s in-class and hands-on programs lay the foundation for students to practice wise financial habits, reinforce the importance of education and encourage entrepreneurial thinking. Activities build upon one another and focus on topics including the importance of the roles of workers in the community, roles people play in the local economy, saving money, various careers, budgeting and financial decision making skills. Our funding is provided by local businesses, foundations and individuals.
Make-A-Wish® Philadelphia and Susquehanna Valley
Mission and History
Make-A-Wish® grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. Founded in 1980 when a group of caring volunteers helped a young boy fulfill his dream of becoming a police officer, Make-A-Wish is now the largest wish-granting charity in the world, with 62 chapters in the United States and its territories. With the help of generous donors and nearly 25,000 volunteers, Make-A-Wish grants a wish every 38 minutes and has granted over 218,000 wishes in the U.S. since inception.
Wish Granting
Since 1986, Make-A-Wish® Philadelphia and Susquehanna Valley has granted over 4,470 wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses between the ages of 2 1/2 and 18. Our chapter serves the following 10 counties: Bucks, Chester, Cumberland, Dauphin, Delaware, Lancaster, Lebanon, Montgomery, Perry and Philadelphia. Make-A-Wish becomes aware of a child’s wish through referrals made by parents and guardians or medical professionals, such as doctors, nurses, social workers, and child-life specialists. Most wishes fall within one of the four categories: "I want to have..." "I want to go..." "I want to be..." "I want to meet..."
Funding
Of the Make-A-Wish® Philadelphia and Susquehanna Valley’s revenue, 86% is dedicated to our wish-granting efforts. Make-A-Wish is a 501(c)(3) corporation, making contributions tax deductible. For the 7th year in a row, the chapter received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator (www.charitynavigator.org), America’s largest independent evaluator of charities. As reported by Charity Navigator, the chapter ranks the highest among all Make-A-Wish chapters in the country.
